Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986

Description

This Act is primarily concerned with welfare and regulation of animals used in experimental studies

The use of animals in experiments is a highly emotive subject that many people are uncomfortable about. It is indisputable that in the past many major advances in medicine would not have occurred without studies in animals, but increasingly alternative methods are being sought and Government are supporting studies into these. Strict conditions have to be met in order to obtain a license to conduct studies using animals, and of paramount importance are the need to reduce the number of animals used,  to protect animal welfare and avoid/minimise suffering .
